About
As the name shows, this is just WordPress’s version of the jQuery Lightbox Plugin written by balupton, working perfectly with WordPress 2.2 or up, and fully compatible with K2!
Instructions
Just download the plugin, unzip the files to the wp-content\plugins folder and activate the plugin in WordPress options.
Then, every time you want to use the Lightbox effect, just place a link to the image, and add the rel=”lightbox” attribute to it, in order to activate the effect when the link is clicked. You can also use rel=”lightbox-album” replacing album by a any keyword to group some pictures on an album!
Sample
Click the image bellow!

<a href="image.png" title="Image Title" rel="lightbox"><img src="image_thumbnail.png" alt="Image Title" /></a>

Hi!
I have the problem that have been mentioned above, I cannot change the English language for the images (Close, Image of, etc)
I have tried clearing cache, tests have been made on Firefox, IE and Opera, still nothing… I have even deleted the jquery.lightbox.js from the site, but the script is still working and in English!
May be it is related to the file named jquery.lightbox.packed.js? When this file is deleted the whole script is not working!
Hope you can give any explanation, for statistics I am running wordpress 2.7 with NextGen gallery with your lightbox plugin implementation (was the only lightbox version which was compatiable with NextGen)
Greeting Didzis, as I said before, the only way you can change the language is by editing the “lightbox.js” file, then confirm that the “lightbox.php” file is pointing to the “.js” file and not the “.packed.js” one.
Save all, clear the cache (use Ctrl+F5 to be sure!) and test it!
Thanks, the problem was that in index.php it was pointing to “packed.js” and changing path to the right file everything works nice!
I downloaded the plugin last night, activated it, and tested it on one page of our site. It worked beautifully. Today, we’re going through exactly the same process on a blog post and it will not work. Instead of linking to the larger image, we only get a blank box with the swirling dots. If you go to the site linked from this comment, and click on the first image in the link, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Since the plugin works on images on a static page on this WordPress site, why are we having problems with using it on blog posts? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Shari, the link itself must point to an image and not to a page! The link on your thumbnail is pointing to a page!

thanks Pedro – it’s a very nice plugin!
I’m getting into troubles with the line: $.Lightbox.domReady();
FireBug says $.Lightbox is undefined and on Safari I have a black loading screen until I click and only then I have the page – could you point out some potential solutions? Thanks
Greetings “j”, If you read above on the comments, you’ll see that there are issues between Firebug and jQuery (so it’s out of my hands!), so I suggest to use Firebug only when needed!

Hi, thanks for your work, just wanted to let you know of a very slight bug I have found. When I load my page, using FF3, the first image loads at the bottom of the screen, and only after that load does it move to the middle…. So sometimes I can’t see the first image properly/ Hope you can fix this in the future.
Otherwise ideal for my applicaiton, best wishes
Andrew
I have done everything listed here and used the code provided. When my photo pops up, it is offset from the white background box. Why? Can you help me fix this?
See this post for what I am referencing:
http://ian-and-christie.com/2009/03/20/friday-photo-telluride/
The problem is at the file “http://ian-and-christie.com/wp-content/themes/fieldofdreams-03/style.css”.
Your theme CSS file includes an entry for “img” with “margin” and “padding” values; just remove these padding and margin values and it will work just fine!
How does this work with wordpress-gallery?
It’s a work in progress yet…
… that has now ended, with support for WordPress native galleries added on version 0.6!
Dear Pedro,
Is there a step-by-step tutorial of how to work with your plugin.
Because I just can’t get it to work. I have installed the plugin. Then I have to do something, but what…
When I want to put a picture in a post, I use the wordpress uploader. Should I put the rel=”lightbox” attribute somewhere a field in the “Add an image” box?
Or should I do something completely else. I am not a complete idiot with html.
Please help, thanks,
Wouter
Just check the sample code on the top of this page… if you know HTML, I think you’ll understand it quite well!
hey,
it appears that my theme isn’t compatible with jquery… i tried it on other themes and the lightbox works
how do i make my current theme jquery compatible??
thnks~!
Only by checking a sample I’ll be able to see what’s wrong… so just send a link to it!
pedro- is there a way to have a single photo appear under a blog posting which when clicked (opens in lightbox) and allows you to navigate through multiple images.
Hum… you can always put all the images on the page and set the CSS Style property to “display: none”, I think that will do the trick.
The other way I think I’ll be by using JavaScript, but that will mean some extra work!
it looks like very nice plugin and simple to use

Hello,
how can i show the full-size-image, and not the relativ high and with (sorry for my bad english!)
Malte
Hi,
I translated the texts like “image x of y” or “click to close” in jquery.lightbox.js and also made some config changes there (deactivated the download link). I really have uploaded the file with the changes and I have cleared the cache.
But I still have all the English texts and the download link. (Even if I use another browser, computer, internet connection, at a completely different place and network…. so it really shows the wrong thing!)
How could that be? Where does it come from?
I have installed WordPress 2.7.1 – is that the problem? Doesn’t you extension work proper with that?
Steffi
Hum… I think you did all the changes, so it should work ok now… don’t really know where you went wrong…

When the image is opened, can it be printed? In other words, if the image contained directions and you wanted to allow your visitor to have the ability to print from that opened image, other than a screen-shot capture can it be done through a print command?
My PC running Vista keeps giving me a “Not Possible” button.
Thanks,
Cyndi
Well, I think you can always use the right mouse button and select “View Image” from the menu and then print the image (on Firefox); some browsers may also allow to right-click and “Print” from the menu…
Hi Pedro,
I am trying to use your Lightbox Plugin along with the Magazeen Theme wich you can get here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/02/23/magazeen-free-magazine-look-wordpress-theme/
My problem is that this them uses jquery 1.3.1 (also works on 1.3.2) with some nice functions. When I activate your Lightbox plugin, the effects in the theme don’t work anymore. Do you have any idea how I can get your plug-in to use the same jquery file as the theme so there won’t be any problems?
Thank you
Greetings Patrice! It just so happens that I’m actually finishing a new version of the plugin, and this new version runs on jQuery 1.3.x!
I think it will be ready for production by tomorrow, so please be patient and stay tuned!
Update: version 0.6 (that has jQuery 1.3.2 bundled) is now available for download!
Bom Dia. Thanks for a great plugin. I have a small problem that when the mouse cursor goes over an image it doesn’t change to a hand – it remains an arrow. Muito annoying.
That’s probably a problem with your CSS stylesheet… I think…
Can you give me an example?
I have sorted that now thanks – I just hadn’t added a link.
However I do have another problem that I think has come about since the upgrade to 0.6. When an image is displayed & you hover over the close x the bottom of the image flashes on & off. That’s in Firefox 3, in IE all looks ok. Whether its a conflict with some FF addon I’ve got installed I don’t know.
If you email me I can give you username/password to go to the (yet to be launched) site for an example.

you have you bug in the Firefox – Close panel always blind. I have fixed it – replace old javascript files with new. downloaded it from jquery.com
Don’t really know where the bug is, so I’ll just take your word for it and update the plugin to include the newest files!
That’s fixed my problem.
Thanks! the problem was fixed!!!!!!!
:)
nice plugin!
nice blog!
very nice
When I activate this plugin using “Agent” theme premium real estate theme everything that was centered moved to the left…any fixes for this?
Fixed it nevermind…commented out the first line in the css folder and everything works perfect now.
@GsX – I ran into the same issue with my SutdioPress theme and now, thanks to your post, it’s fixed!!!!
Thanks!
THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Finally, a Lightbox plugin that works for me, I’ve tried them all….
Now, I have a small problem with a pop-up when any of the pages are loaded.
“Lightbox was not able to find its javascript script tag necassary for auto-inclusion.”
But it works? Is there something stuck in one of the php files you think from one of the old lightbox installations?
There can be leftover’s from older installations, but try checking the active plugin list in your wordpress first!
if you can, please send me the address to a page where this is happening so I can check it out and give you further help!
http://salonlift.com/sl/?page_id=43
above is a page that has a gallery on it, but it is happening on everypage.
Checked my active plug-in list, and this one and the gallery maker are the only lightbox apps running.
Thanks.
Found this, still not sure how to fix it, maybe you can help

Thanks for this plugin!
I have only one problem with it: how can I add Google analytics code to track images viewed on my blog?
its nice
thank you so much! this will be very useful once i set up my online shop :]

Can anyone tell me how to increase the transparency of the background ever so lightly? I cannot understand where the transparency or color is set.
Maurice,
look in the css files for opacity, but be careful. Lightbox code is easy to mess up…
download the firebug plugin for firefox and play with the code in there, you should be able to figure it out.
best of luck!
Just doing some testing and having trouble with the first image in the album, which seems to load low on the page, when all the others are centered. Am I doing something wrong or is it a glitch?
http://demo.thedesignweb.co.nz/?page_id=70
Thanks!
Belinda, I tested your demo and it looks to work fine… what browser & operating system are you using?
Pedro/Belinda–
It’s a safari problem, and I’m having it too. Firefox and IE work perfectly, but Safari seems to center the first image on the full page, not the visible page. It corrects itself after the first click. I’m trying to figure out what safari doesn’t recognize… I’ll hit you back if I figure it out…
I updated this when I made my new blog and by some reason it does not play nice with k2 anymore… (I am using the RC7 of K2… i think).
What version of the K2 are you using? At least with the latest nightly build (791) it works fine (I’m using it
)… can you point me to an example so I can check what’s wrong?
Well. I am using the RC7 that was posted on their blog, I _think_ =P
But it worked just fine before updating the plugin.
The blog are right now at (temporary adresses as I’m in the middle of a move/update):
http://72.29.68.220/~soilhear/blog/
and a relevant post with lightboxes are:
http://72.29.68.220/~soilhear/blog/2008/03/22/paskpyssel/
If updating to the latest nightly would fix it I will update, but that would mean more translating for me
Well I tested the links you gave me and they seem to be working fine on Firefox 3.0… what browser are you using?
Well. It _works_, but the jquery part of k2 is broken, i.e. the live search and rolling archives.
See the sidebar search for example.
(I see now that you do not have the rolling archives activated yourself…)
Ok, I see your point… start by updating the K2 to the latest nightly build available here:
http://getk2.com/nightly/
I think that will solve the problem!
Yep. Works fine now (seems like I had a really old version too…)
Has anyone addressed the double-click issue? I use this plug as it is the only one that plays nice with NextGEN, but users are complaining about double-clicking and getting an all black screen with no way to navigate out.
Any way to fix this issue?
Also, how would one lighten up the transparency of the background when in lightbox mode?
Thanks for your help…
Hey, i tried it, yes, you do get a black screen and cant navigate. damn, hope aomeone can help
Same problem here, any suggest on how to fix the double click black screen things ?
About now the only notable bug of this great plug-in.
Do you use CForms? Try disabling it and tell me if that solved the problem…
I may be mistaken but is there a way to relate images without displaying them all on a page?
I’d like to have one image shown and when it’s clicked on, it allows users to navigate through the whole album.
Is this possible without major revisions to the code?
Collin,
I did what you are trying to do by modifying my css.
I created a class of “noshow” which I made display: none, and added that to the caption tag of the images I didnt want to show when the page loads. Make sure you show the first image then in lighbox you can click through all of them.
I’m super new to wordpress and seem to be having issues with the plugin, I have activated it, added the code to the appropriate pages and it doesn’t seem to work for me, I’m fairly familiar with lightbox but can’t seem to get this to work…
Heres a link to one of the pages it doesn’t work on: http://www.apecakemedia.com/?page_id=85
The page in your example doesn’t have any script tags on it (it should have at least the ones used by wordpress) so I think there’s a problem with your wordpress version or theme… try updating wordpress and check with other themes to see if the problem mantains!
I don’t understand, I tested another theme and it worked fine, what do I need to add to my current theme in order to get it to work?
Well, I can’t say that for sure, I think it really is some kind of problem with your theme’s script… but I can’t really tell by looking to the HTML of the page!
Dear Pedro,
I love your plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work on some themes.
When I run it on the standard theme, for example, it runs just fine.
I was hoping to use this theme:
http://wordpressthemesbase.com/view/829.html
It doesn’t work with this theme… You have any idea’s?
Just to let you know that I found that answer myself…
It’s this line that was missing in “header.php” file in the new theme:
Place this line just before the tag…
It works fine, but you should set the ie6_upgrade lightbox parameter default to false. I don’t want my site secretly sending a request to savethedevelopers.org without me knowing it. For starters, it throws an error in IE6, and also, how are we to know it’s not an attack site? Fix it please.
I just saw the plugin update alert… that was quick. Well done for accepting my point and acting on it.
It was on the “to do” list for a few days, but only today I had the time to fix and update it!

Hi,
This is a great plugin but just one question, How to fullsize the Popup Image?
If you see here http://www.minisitecorner.com/mini-site-and-e-cover/
the image is very small when the actual size is width 500px.
You have to point the link to the main picture and not the thumbnail… but I think you already know this since your example seems to be working fine!
